Semester of creating

This past semester was filled with learning new things, I tried to push the boundaries of what I could do. My goal for each project this past semester was to learn at least one new method. I’m going to go through each project and review what I learned.

        The first project of the year was “Liz”.  At the start of creating her, I bettered my 3D modeling knowledge to create the full skull as a digital base. I transferred that base file over and learned how to use Slicer for Fusion 360 to create the skeleton structure that I cut out using a laser etcher on MDF. The canvas that is covering half of the MDF skeleton is handmade paper that I used a mold and deckle to create sheets that I wrapped around the skull. After the paper dried I used this opportunity to learn how to use an airbrush where I layered 5 colors to really bring the paper to life.
 
          After “Liz” I Created “Chops” where I started by 3D scanning myself to create digital models that I learned how to edit in Autodesk for Fusion 360. Taking the Autodesk files I transferred them to be able to cut them out of Insulation foam using a CNC router machine. When painting the arms I learned how to create a rough texture in the foam that I used to help show the degradation of the arms.
 
            The last project of the year was the “M.A.D” gun which is made with EVA foam and is the first piece I made using that material. I had to learn how to cut and sand this material along with methods of how join pieces together. The whole project was a learning curve. I also worked on my 3D modeling skills making the “reservoirs” that can be seen on the workbench leaking, and on the gun. Then once it was ready to be painted I learned more about airbrushing, covering the majority of the gun using this method and I learned how to detail the piece using a dry brush technique to add smaller details.
 
          Over all, this semester I learned a lot of new methods for creation and plan on continuing to learn over the summer. Working with the EVA foam was extremely eye opening and I have some plans to work with it this summer to learn and hone my craft more. I also am getting a 3D printer so I can work more on 3D modeling to hopefully integrate that even more into my work. The work never stops but neither does the fun!
